For Organisations

Constellation

Give women a private way to explore possible patterns of abuse without having to disclose their circumstances first.

Constellation is a private, self-guided online tool your team can offer alongside your existing support. Women select the behaviours they recognise from their own experiences and see whether they may form part of a wider pattern, helping more of them reach the support you provide.

Find out how to offer Constellation

01 — Purpose & Context

The Need

Understanding possible patterns of abuse can open the door to support.

Constellation was designed to support women in the first two stages of abuse: recognising the signs and understanding the behaviours. A woman may be experiencing abuse long before she can recognise it, name it or feel able to discuss it with a professional. She may know something is wrong without knowing whether it is abuse. Shame, embarrassment and fear of judgement can make it harder still to speak to someone.581, 762, 763

Research shows that recognition is associated with seeking help. Women who recognised their experiences as abuse were almost twice as likely to talk to police and about twice as likely to see a need for formal support.764

Research also shows that some women find it easier to disclose abuse through digital screening than face to face, particularly when they feel shame or fear judgement.765

Constellation provides a private starting point. A woman can explore the behaviours she is experiencing, see how they may form part of wider patterns of abuse and begin to understand what those patterns could mean. She can do this independently, without creating an account or giving identifying information, when and where it is safe.

With that understanding, she can begin to explore her options and consider professional support. For your organisation, this creates an opportunity to offer relevant information earlier, build trust and support her when she is ready to engage.

Where Constellation Fits into Her Journey

Constellation is part of a portfolio of products designed to meet her information needs at each stage of her journey through abuse. The highlighted stages below show where Constellation fits within that journey.

Where Constellation Fits in Her Journey and the Wider Portfolio: a rising spiral of six stages, each matched to a Harbour Lights product. 01 Recognising Signs and 02 Understanding Behaviours, both highlighted: Constellation, helping her understand what is happening, and abuse and its impact, with clear, trusted information. 03 Assessing Risk: Lumina, tools to help her assess her situation and identify ways to respond. 04 Seeking Support: Support Directory and Checklists, connecting her with specialist services in her area and practical checklists for the next steps. 05 Navigating Separation: Post-Separation Abuse Guides, for the abuse that continues after separation. 06 Free from Abuse: Support Directory, ongoing support to help her build the life she wants.

03 — Organisational Applications

How to Offer Constellation

Help women explore their concerns and connect with the support you already provide.

Your organisation may already provide a wide range of support, but women who don't recognise the abuse they are experiencing may not realise that your help is available to them. Constellation helps bridge that gap by showing how individual behaviours can form part of a wider pattern of abuse, giving women a clearer understanding of their experiences and the language needed to discuss them.

This creates an opportunity for women to seek support earlier and begin building a relationship with your team, encouraging further engagement with the services you already provide as they move towards safety and independence.

Where could you offer Constellation?

  • On your website

Include Constellation alongside your existing support information, giving women a private way to explore their concerns before deciding whether to contact your organisation.

  • Through your team

Your staff can offer Constellation when a woman is unsure how to understand or describe what she is experiencing. She can explore the behaviours privately, without needing your team to reach a conclusion on her behalf.

  • Alongside your existing support services

Where a woman chooses to discuss what she has found, Constellation can help her describe the behaviours she has recognised and the possible connections between them. This gives your team a starting point for exploring her concerns and considering what further support may be appropriate.

04 — Quality & Safeguarding

The Evidence Behind the Report

Research-grounded information that works alongside professional assessment and safeguarding.

Constellation supports the work of trained professionals by helping women recognise possible patterns of abuse, understand what they may mean and find the language to communicate their experiences when seeking help.

Each behaviour a woman can select is drawn from peer-reviewed research and linked to the type of abuse it is associated with. Where her responses suggest a possible pattern, Constellation explains it, provides relevant information and shows her where and how to access professional support.

This gives women a clearer understanding of experiences they may have struggled to explain, and a starting point for discussing their concerns with someone who can help. Assessment, safeguarding and professional advice remain with trained professionals, who can consider the behaviours in the context of each woman’s circumstances. The decisions about what to do next remain hers.
